2016 Preparation Before Leaving

2016 Preparations Before Leaving

Monday, April 18, 2016

We are in spring here at Marina di Ragusa, a plethora of activity is going on around the marina, some boats already left a week ago people have been flying in from all parts of the world to get the boat ready for the coming months of cruising.

The boatyard is busy with boats hauling out for a quick clean up or a check and replace of shaft seals, inspecting seacocks, rudder posts and anything else that is usually under water, maybe a new coat of antifouling paint would help too. Other boats are being launched and sent to their slips for final on deck inspection getting stored gear and mounting it where it will be more useful, provisioning before heading away, making sure to stock up on excellent but cheap Sicilian wine.

We are getting close, all repairs are complete, the hardest one was the wind instrument, had to take the trip 4 times up the mast as the cable was getting stuck somewhere then I decided to change the messenger to a lighter nylon line and this worked, did the modification on deck and then up again to help Lillian pull the cable down but again it was getting stuck, we tried soap to no avail,  in the meantime sitting all crunched up in a boson’s chair is not a very comfortable situation and I had to be brought down for a rest. Later in the day I was hauled up for the third time, pulled the cable out from the top cleaned of the soap, cut the seven cables so that one was shorter then the next to have a fine taper, re-taped it very careful not to leave any tape protruding sideways. Asked Lillian to pull from the bottom one more time, she did and the cable came out the bottom as it is supposed to do.

With Lillian’s shoulder not healed yet, I decided to use the windlass to haul me up, so I asked my friend Roy to come and help me and to show Lillian how it is done. After watching Roy doing this Lillian decided that if I need to go up she could do it for me and so she hauled me up three times in one day until the job was complete, I think it was more tiring for me squashed in the boson’s chair. You might say that this is not safe to do. I would agree if using a self-tailing winch because it is harder to release the line from it and also because it is much faster than a windlass, when using a windlass, we also have a separate safety line attached to me, and if by any chance the windlass does not stop for any reason when it is supposed to, all that has to be done is let the tension of the line and the drum just spins without any consequences and since the clutch on the mast is closed the line cannot run free and drop me to the deck.

Fuel filters have been changed, bilges cleaned, a leaking watermaker fitting replaced, mildew from external teak removed, engine room organized, wind, instrument tested and calibrated, genoa raised, new dodger and bimini fitted properly, new instrument cover looks great, all we are waiting for is the new mainsail, I did go to see the work in progress, it looks great and must say that Paolo and his wife Laura are doing a great job at SiSail part of OneSail™, they are true professionals.

Our plans change by the minute, but as of now we are going to spend a few weeks in Malta, then off to Greece, yes Greece for the fourth time but we love it there, then on to Turkey to restart the clock EU clock being a non EU boat. On the way there we plan to visit Crete and on the way back the southern Peloponnese, I will write all about our 2016 anchorages in the fall.

Until then we wish a wonderful summer to everyone and a safe with fair winds to our sailing friends around the world.

2015 Sardinia

07/Sept/2015

After a two month long stay in Malta which we thoroughly enjoyed most of the time on a mooring in Marsaxlokk Harbor. Sometimes moving around from one anchorage to another. My preferred anchorage is just below the Mnajdra Temple north of Wied Iz Zurieq with crystal clear water and white sand bottom, great place for scuba diving and snorkling. The down side to this is that you will have to check the weather as it could be untenable at times.

We left on a good weather window towards Monastir early morning before the sun pooped over the horizon, and headed east with full mainsail and genoa, with a wind on the aft quarter stayed like this all the way to Monastir except for the overnight that we had to start the engine to keep us going at least 5 kts of speed. It took us 32.3 hrs to cover the 173 nm distance at an average speed of 5.4 kts.

We are now enjoying North Sardinia (Costa Smeralda) for the our second time here. We had a wonderful leg from Monastir to Villasimius Sardinia we covered the 233 nm in 44.25 hrs. We motored sailed up the coast in two 10 hour days and we have been pattering around this  beautiful part of the Mediterranean ever since. The weather has been great although we had some strong winds but no problem around here there is always a fantastic bay to anchor in with a windward shore.

We had a bit of a mishap here on the way to the Coast Guard station Lillian tripped and injured herself so we are staying in Golfo Aranci till she gets better. The worst part is a shoulder bruise that does not look very good and doesn’t feel any better. So I will take good care of her here till she get better, doctors do not thing there is any broken bones but was advised to keep her arm in a sling.

In mid September we decided to head down to Arbatax as we could not find a good enough weather window to do a straight run to Marina di Ragusa from NW Sardinia, during the previous weeks and days leading to this decision we looked at many grib files and noticed a definite pattern, when the NW winds blow it wraps around both the NW and the SW becoming northerly and southerly respectively then stops leaving a 25 nm gap of clean weather with light winds around Arbatax all the way to Marsala Sicily. We need this type of weather as we didn’t want to get into heavy seas with Lillian injury which by the way was X-Rayed and found to be a upper humerus fractured. Therefore we left Arbatax Sardinia  on the 25th Sept 2015, we hoisted the full main and motored out of the anchorage in a light  NW breeze, further out we found some nasty swells coming from the NE and the NW some as high as 2 meters these are created from the NW high winds and some other storm close to Genoa Italy I was a little concerned with Lillian having use of only one hand but by 17:00 things started to settle down and Lillian managed to handle herself very well. The first night was nice and the next morning was calm we had the mainsail up all the time and when we reached between the Egadi islands at the western end of Sicily the wind picked up so we opened the genoa and turned the engine off sailing downwind making 4 knots at best but the sun was bright and we were very happy to have made this decision. The following night we motored along the southern coast of Sicily , the next morning we could see familiar landmarks, the sea was calm with just a light breeze from the NE. We arrived at our winter spot at 14:00 on 27th Sept after 54 hrs from our departure. We also caught a load of fish mainly tuna, it was too much for us so we gave a lot of it to friends.

2012 Greece

Our second voyage through the Greek Aegean islands and the Corinth canal into the ionian was as good if not better than the first time in 2011, this time we stayed further south and visited new places like Astypalaia, Tilos, Delos, Syros just to name a few, but we also revisited some of our favorite place to show our grandson Tate
